DESIGNATIONS EARNED: ABOUT ME:
I was raised in Carroll County near Galax Virginia (about 100 miles Southwest of Roanoke, Virginia). Our home did not have electricity, running water, telephone, central heat or AC, or a bathroom (and YES the Sears Roebuck catalog was a coveted and "handy" possession). I attended a one-room grade school (7 grades in one room) without a bathroom, central heat, or running water. The school "library" was a van that came by every 60 days with books for us to check out. Teacher's pets (I was one) were allowed to walk 1/2 mile into the woods to a spring and bring back a bucket of water for the school each day. Children were inventive then and games such as "Kick the Can," "No Bears Out Tonight" and hopscotch were played OUTSIDE, not in front of a computer or game screen. Needless to say, I have a real appreciation of the "finer" amenities in today's homes and schools.
My father was an iron ore/copper miner and my mother was a housewife. Later, when my brother and I were teens, both parents obtained jobs at Fries Knitting Mill in Fries, VA. and they worked there for more than 20 years. My parents still own my mother's home place--a quiet, modest. bucolic, 15 acre farm (now with bathroom, running water, telephone, and central heat & AC). The little red building you see to the right of the home is the old outdoor toilet (only one stool).

My parents had 10 and 9 siblings respectively, so the yearly family reunions are something I have always enjoyed. My mother has no siblings remaining and my father only has two left, so the reunion crowds have dwindled. The best part about big families is the wonderful cousins you inherit!
My mother is now in a nursing home and my father visits her every other day. I go home once a month. I have a laptop and can accomplish almost everything when I visit home that I can in my office.
Below is my mother, Emma, (age 85) and to the right is Dad, Gilbert (age 86) with his sister, Beatrice, who is 94.

I have a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree from Radford University with post-graduate studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. My degrees say, "Radford College; Women's Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute" (i.e. "Before Radford was a University," "Before Radford and VPI were coed," "Before VPI added State University to the name," and "Older than DIRT!"). I taught math at Dublin High School and then taught math, geometry, logic, trig, and calculus to freshmen at Virginia Tech for 6 years prior to moving to the Hampton Roads area in 1979.
I have two loving adult children, Lisa Arguello and Michael Clay.
Lisa, the oldest, is an audiologist at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She and her husband, Francisco, who works as a medical equipment technician for Bowman Gray School of Medicine, have two children, Sarah and Julio. Below is Lisa with my granddaughter, Sarah, and Franscisco, Lisa's husband.

My grandaughter, Sarah, has a black belt in Tai Quan Do and teaches it to children. She attends UNC at Greensboro with the goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. My grandson, Julio will be graduating from high school soon. Julio has said since he was three years old that he wants to be a paleontologist. That is OK--I will soon be a dinosaur!

Michael, my son, lives in Blacksburg, Virginia and he owns a computer consulting business called Clay Solutions (www.ClaySolutions.com). His wife, Debbie, is a loan processor at WestStar Mortgage.

My brother, Gary Lawson, is the entrepreneur of the family. He worked full time as a senior in high school. With the exception of that job and his two years of Marine Corp service, he has always been self-employed. He now owns Gary's Backhoe Service in Hillsville, Virginia and he runs a successful business with employees, heavy equipment, a calendar, a cell phone, sticky notes, calculators, legal pads, file cabinets and wits--NO computer! His wife, Melissa, is manager of an ABC Store.

I love racquetball (but the old gray mare ain't what she used to be!), occasional tennis (the racquetball wrist action makes "choppy" tennis), learning (taste not the Pyrean spring), reading the newspaper, movies, anything computer, internet jokes, Snopes.com, YouTube Videos (music, informative, or funny ones), crossword puzzles, Wikipedia (Yes, I know Wiki can be edited by regular people and is cross-checked by college students and may NOT be the final word), hiking (Viva! Mt. LeConte) and most of all--interesting/challenging conversations or games with friends.
I moved to Hampton Roads in 1979 (when it was called "Tidewater") and I have been a realty executive in this area since.
